Mama-San in St. Davids is moving beyond traditional Asian takeout with some innovative dishes, writes Ed Williams for Main Line Today.
The restaurant across from Radnor High School is efficient but offers high-quality sushi and other Asian dishes.
It is the product of WIN Signature Restaurants’ Pearl and Paul Somboonsong.
“Mama-San is our testing ground, allowing us to see what works and what doesn’t,” said Pearl.
The menu is visually appealing and includes pan-fried dumplings, Azie Spicy Tuna Rolls, an artful Bento box filled with seasoned edamame, maki rolls, and a small salad, as well as umami fries, garlic butter noodles, and a build-your-own poke bowl.
Food is ordered at the counter or via self-serve touch screens.
The Zen-like interior was designed by Francesca Carney of Swrl Studios, one of Pearl’s former classmates at Radnor High School.
There are warm wood tones, half-moon booths, custom banquettes, and a Japanese Matsu tree.
The overhead light uses repurposed material from Azie on the Main Line, which closed this past year.
A mini-bar also serves a selection of adult beverages and cocktails. Unique desserts include a mochi brownie made with Japanese sweet rice flour, miso chocolate chip cookies, and ube Rice Krispy treats, which are made with purple yam.
