Delaware County residents have an understandable bias when it comes to perceiving the number of Wawa stores in any given state.
They are likely to assume that Pennsylvania lays claim to having the most stores since the convenience store chain originated in Delco, but actually, they’d be wrong, writes Mike Brant for WPST.
So if it’s not Pennsylvania, it must be its close neighbor, New Jersey.
At one time, that would have been the right answer. New Jersey, until recently, could claim to have more stores than any other state in the U.S.
No more.
According to data service provider ScrapeHero, as of April 28, 2025, Florida now comes out on top with 299 Wawas. New Jersey, at last count, has 293 stores, lowering it to second place.
Out of fairness to New Jersey, though, Florida is a bigger state and needs more Wawas.
With Wawa’s expansion kick, locals can also be comforted that we’re exporting our way of life to Floridians and elsewhere around the country.
Two other things in New Jersey’s favor? Full service at Wawa gas pumps, and stores that are always conveniently nearby owing to the state’s smaller size and density.
