Beyond the day-to-day, there are Delaware County special places that stand out for their history and beauty.
Here are six places to spend some leisure time exploring, writes Sarah Maiellano, Emily Goulet, and Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.
Drive through a private community at the Ardrossan Estate in Villanova and check out investment banker Robert Leaming Montgomery’s Georgian Revival mansion, highlighted in The Philadelphia Story.
Take a shuttle bus from the Brandywine Museum in Chadds Ford and visit artist Andrew Wyeth’s studio, a former 1875 schoolhouse that still houses Wyeth’s collections, books, and furnishings.
Visit 13 covered bridges in the Brandywine Valley, including the Bartram covered bridge in Newtown Square. It’s the last covered bridge in Delaware County, and though it’s closed to traffic, there is a lookout point nearby.
Chanticleer Garden, a 35-acre pleasure garden, awaits in Wayne, featuring a bulb meadow, pond garden, stone ruin, and a sunny gravel garden.
In Media Borough, there’s the Tyler Arboretum, 650 acres of wooded trails that include tree houses, the Edible Garden, and a hands-on Fragrant Garden.
Swarthmore College hosts the Scott Arboretum, a free “garden of ideas” on campus featuring native trees, shrubs, and flowers.
