Phil Martelli Jr. Is New Basketball Coach at Virginia University

Phil Martelli Jr. has been named the new men's basketball coach at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Virginia Commonwealth University has confirmed previous reports that Drexel Hill native Phil Martelli Jr. is its new men’s basketball coach, with reports from CBS Sports that his father might also join the VCU staff in some capacity.

Martelli, 43, becomes part of the Rams after leading Bryant University to its second NCAA Tournament appearance, according to staff reports in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

His father, Phil Martelli, Sr., is the former St. Joseph’s basketball coach

Martelli Jr. takes over at VCU for Ryan Odom, who left Virginia after leading the Rams to the NCAA Tournament. along with an Atlantic 10 championship.

Joining the VCU staff puts Martelli Jr. back in the A-10, where he played for his father for four seasons from 1999 to 2003.

Martelli Jr. was 43-25 in two seasons as Bryant’s head coach, and served as associate head coach before he was promoted.

He’s also served as an assistant at Delaware, Central Connecticut State, and Niagara.

Martelli Jr. also spent time as an assistant for the Delaware Blue Coats of the G League when they were known as the 87ers.
