Despite being let go suddenly in 2019 as St. Joseph’s University’s head basketball coach, Phil Martelli of Media isn’t slowing down and isn’t retiring, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.
Martelli had 24 seasons as head coach at St. Joseph’s, leading the Hawks to seven NCAA tournaments and six NIT appearances.
These days, the 70-year-old is working on “the power of thank you” and extolling the value of relationships.
He was inspired after addressing a leadership class at the University of Michigan last April, his final week there as assistant men’s basketball coach.
Martelli’s message drew on his 50 years of coaching at the high school and collegiate levels, but he wasn’t sure how his talk was received.
“I got an email that still makes me tear up,” Martelli said. “A young woman told me she called her parents on Zoom after hearing me speak to thank them for paying her tuition.”
That led to him organizing the Make a Difference campaign, working to enhance leadership and communication skills for businesses, schools, and teams.
He inspires through his in-person talks, social media posts, and podcasts that lead to leadership and theories “I hope will take you from good to great.”
