Radnor Middle School girls had a chance to experience the life of a Villanova Women’s Basketball player in a unique mentoring program that paired the Radnor eighth graders with members of the team.
There were 28 eighth graders from the Wayne school selected for the program that lasted over four visits, writes Madeleine Wright for CBS News Philadelphia.
“My mentor is Annie on the basketball team,” said eighth-grader Leah Humphrey. “She’s really nice. She’s very inspirational. She’s giving us a lot of advice.”
The middle schoolers received advice on time management and handling peer pressure.
“You don’t realize how much of an impact you can have and for me, I show up every day and go to practice, but these girls see us as much more than that,” said Villanova junior Annie Welde.
The Villanova players expect their relationship to continue with the girls.
“We’re here for more than just the four sessions that we see them and they’re right down the road, so, just keeping that in mind,” Welde said.
The program has been so successful, in fact, that Villanova football players will be mentoring seventh grade boys of color next fall.
