Beyond its excellent academic programs, Swarthmore College is frequently celebrated for its remarkable architecture and breathtaking scenery.

Swarthmore, founded in 1864, began as a Quaker institution and was one of the first co-ed colleges in the country.

Parrish Hall lies at the college’s center, an impressive structure in Second Empire Style. A fire broke out in the hall in 1881 and burned it down, but builders quickly rebuilt and restored it to its original design.

The campus also hosts the 350-acre Scott Arboretum, a gorgeous botanical garden established in 1929. The garden, named after the class of 1895 graduate Arthur Hoyt Scott, acts as a memorial to him.

The garden features around 4,000 varieties of flora and offers several programs to teach and inspire the next generation of horticulturalists. Visitors can explore the grounds for free throughout the year.

Within the arboretum lies the Scott Outdoor Amphitheatre, built in 1942. The outdoor theatre hosts an assortment of performances and recitals alongside yoga classes and school gatherings.
