Philadelphia artist Fabiola Lara has a creative mind in more ways to one as she has a unique way of placing her art on display, writes Violet Comber-Wilen for Billy Penn at WHYY.
She uses a vending machine!
A Chilean-American artist with more than a decade of experience, her idea to display her art through a vending machine was influenced by a trend she discovered from other creators.
Eventually, Lara found a vending machine within her price range on Craigslist.
While it was in rough condition and she had some initial concerns about concerns, she soon learned about operation and maintenance to get the most out of it.
“It’s all about the mechanism where you put the coins into it,” Lara said. “I have become a bit of a professional now.”
Her artwork features 3-by-2.5-inch prints that represent various locations throughout Philadelphia. She started off with little postages of Philly landmarks, then she created holiday versions of them.
More recently, she created a collection of mini prints on different neighborhoods.
Art vending machines debuted as a concept in the 1990s, and Lara is adding to that legacy.
She plans to continue expanding her collection and adding new locations and design ideas to her art work.
