U.S. Navy veteran Shawn Swords from Glenolden and his film crew are on a mission to capture the stories of local veterans, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
“Most people, after combat, they don’t want to talk about combat or having served, but I think our films are very cathartic for them, and I think it makes a larger audience aware of the sacrifice that these people and their loved ones made while they were in service,” said Swords, director of operations for American Veterans Media.
The media group comprises veterans who have worked together for 25 years. They started producing veteran-specific media about five years ago.
Swords co-founded American Veterans Media with producer Jimmy Kirlin, who is a Vietnam combat veteran.
“Usually we do films about groups of people,” Swords said, but they recently did their first documentary on an individual, Ralph Galati, a pilot in the Vietnam War who was shot down and became a prisoner of war.
Some veteran documentaries from American Veterans Media include “27 Crusaders” from Father Judge High School, and the “Edison 64”, who were lost in the Vietnam War.
