Republicans think they’ve got a chance to get back on Delaware County Council, hoping frustration over a 23 percent tax increase this year will give voters a reason for change.
Two Delaware County Council seats are on the ballot this November, writes Katie Bernard for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Democrats swept the county board in 2019, which had been dominated by Republicans since the Civil War. They held on to all five seats in 2021 and 2023.
Now the GOP sees an opening after the current council OK’d a large tax increase this year to cover a $386 million budget.
“It’s going to take a massive fumble on the Democratic side [for Republicans to win], which they’ve already done by voting to increase taxes by 23 percent,” said Michael Straw, the chair of the Media Republican Party.
Council Vice Chair Richard Womack is running for re-election. A second seat occupied by Councilmember Kevin Madden is open as he faces a term limit.
Several individuals have approached Delaware County GOP Chairman Frank Agovino expressing an interest in running. He hopes to have a candidate by February.
