Increased Coyote Sightings Reported Across Montgomery County
Montgomery County officials are alerting the public to an increase in coyote sightings, reports Annie McCormick for 6 ABC Philadelphia.
Officials have come from Lansdale and Upper Merion Township in recent weeks. Coyotes are present in every Pennsylvania county, and their population is growing.
Game Warden Matthew Johnson of the Pennsylvania Game Commission explained that the animals’ nocturnal habits and summer vegetation often keep them out of sight. However, as winter approaches, food scarcity makes coyotes more visible.
“This time of year, when we get into the winter time, everything in the wild is getting more desperate. Food sources are diminishing as the winter goes on,” Johnson said. While coyotes are unlikely to attack humans, small pets, particularly cats and small dogs, are at risk. “If they find a smaller cat or dog that is accessible, there’s nothing saying they won’t try to pursue it,” he added.
Residents have reported occasional sightings, primarily on security cameras or near schools, though interactions remain rare. Upper Merion Police have shared tips for staying safe:
- Keep a safe distance and do not approach coyotes.
- Use yard lights, motion detectors, or loud noises to deter them.
- Keep pets leashed, especially at dawn, dusk, and night.
- Remove potential food sources like pet food and trash.
- Parents should educate children about coyote encounters.
