The Bonner-Prendergast High School Friars took their first state championship Thursday evening, winning the PIAA Class 4A championship 40-14 over Lampeter-Strasburg at Cumberland Valley High School, writes Matthew DeGeorge for the Daily Times.

The District 12 champion Friars is the first Delaware County team since Strath Haven in 2000 to win a state title. They are the first Delaware County team to even reach the finals since Garnet Valley in 2007.

The new Bonner & Prendie title joins Strath Haven’s back-to-back crowns as the only ones from Delaware County schools since the PIAA began crowning champions in 1988.

The team got an assist from senior running back Mike Johnson, who provided them with four turnovers and four touchdowns.

The Friars scored the game’s first two touchdowns in the first quarter, before Lampeter-Strasburg came back with consecutive scores, writes Aaron Carter for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Then, Bonner-Prendie senior defensive back Jeremiah Coleman grabbed an interception, followed by Johnson’s third touchdown.

Bonner-Prendie senior linebacker Brett Johnson intercepted and scored in a final Lampeter-Stasburg drive before the second half, giving the Friars a 27-14 lead at intermission.

Lampeter-Strasburg never recovered with Johnson adding touchdown runs in the third and fourth quarters.
