The anticipation is over. Bonner Prendergast’s Kevin McGonigle, a highly successful and motivated high school shortstop was drafted 37th overall in the Major Leagues by the Detroit Tigers Sunday, writes Matthew DeGeorge for the Daily Times.

He was the 13th shortstop taken overall.

The Aldan native batted .515 over 25 games this season for the Bonner-Prendergast Friars, with eight doubles, four triples, and six home runs.

He struck out only twice all season and carried out 19 walks, 15 stolen bases, and a slugging percentage of .680.

McGonigle was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Pennsylvania.

The left-handed hitter was also on Team USA, hitting two doubles, a triple, and a home run in 25 games and hitting .520.

Team USA won a gold medal at the Under-18 World Cup last September.

McGonigle led the Friars to the Catholic League title in 2022. His selection in the MLB draft comes amidst his signing to play at Auburn University.

Bonner & Prendergast has been one of the most prolific schools for recent MLB draft picks in all of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

MLB.com ranks the Detroit Tigers 25th in baseball for organizational depth. Six of their top nine and 12 of their top 20 prospects are infield players.
