The marshland at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum may not be the first place you’d think of for a fall family hike, but the refuge is a convenient stop for Delaware and Philadelphia County families.
Kids can spot animals, go birdwatching, and see the seasons change along 10 miles of trails, much of it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
The Visitor Center has new exhibitions and clean bathrooms.
Media Borough also has two hiking destinations for families. The Chester Creek Trail is a converted railway track, making it a smooth and flat hike.
The paved middle section, from Middletown to Aston, runs three miles and is perfect for biker and strollers, with unbelievable views of fall foliage.
Ridley Creek State Park, also in Media, has miles of trails across 2,600 acres. Kids can also find playgrounds, climb rocks, and see some wildlife.
There are kid-friendly educational programs and the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation open on site through November.
