The shop has been run by its original owner Patrick Murphy for 31 years. Over the years, he has mastered a “true New York-style bagel” that helped build a huge following of regulars from both near and afar.

Murphy opened Bagel Barrel after honing his craft under fifth-generation New York bagel maker Alfred Khan

“I learned it the old-fashioned way, right down to the mixer, an old-fashioned mixer, slow and steady, which builds a more consistent dough,” said Murphy. “He would yell at me every day, telling me I was doing it wrong.”

Hard work paid off, and Bagel Barrel became a ritual stop for many. The shop often had lines of people waiting for their favorite treat.

After deciding he needed to be closer to his elderly parents who live in Florida, Murphy met with dozens of prospective buyers to see who would care for his recipes along with his customers and staff.

“I told them they had to keep the staff, and they had to keep the recipes going,” he said.
