Nick Mead, Graduate of Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, to Carry US Flag at Olympic Closing Ceremonies

Nick Mead took a gold medal in rowing and now has been chosen as US flagbearer for the Paris Olympics closing ceremony.

Nick Mead, a 2013 graduate of Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, and a gold medal winner in rowing at the Paris Olympics, has been selected to carry the US Flag during closing ceremonies Sunday, Aug. 11, writes Matthew DeGeorge for the Daily Times.

Mead is one of two US flagbearers, sharing the honor with Katie Ledecky, who took two gold, a silver and a bronze in swimming at the 2024 Games. In total, she has won nine Olympic medals, the most in history for a female swimmer.

Mead and Ledecky were chosen by their peers in a Team USA Athletes Commission vote.

“It is an incredible honor to be selected as the flag bearer, and to represent the United States and the sport of rowing, which has never had an American flag bearer in the history of the Olympics,” Mead said in a USOC statement.

Mead won gold in the men’s coxless four, along with Unionville/Drexel grad Justin Best, Michael Gracy and Liam Corrigan. The quartet earned the first American gold in the event since 1960.

Mead also competed in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as part of the men’s eight, finishing fourth.

He had planned to retire before the Tokyo Games but then rediscovered his rowing passion.
