Kyj’s Bakery Closing in Chester, Brookhaven After a 70-Year Run
You have until Aug. 3 and 4 to visit Kyj’s Bakery before its doors close forever, writes Colin Ainsworth for the Daily Times.
The 70-year-old Ukrainian bakery will close Aug. 3 in Chester and Aug. 4 in Brookhaven.
Kyj’s Bakery was founded in 1954 by Ukrainian immigrants Vasyl and Lydia Kyj. The family business was picked up by a second generation and at various times has had locations in Boothwyn, Springfield, Upper Darby and Upper Chichester.
Regular customers and employees shared memories.
“They make you feel good when you come in through the door and when you leave,” said longtime customer Bruce Neal of Aston. “It’s not only the product they have, but how they treat you,” he said.
Rashedah Doss, a 37-year employee at the Chester store, said they’d have a steady flow of customers that came in every day.
“You know what they want … you see them getting out of their car and you’re already making what they want,” she said.
Enduring customer favorites include Kyj’s babka, chrusciki, pound cake and strawberry shortcake.
“They move away but they remember us, absolutely,” said Sandy Daley, who worked at the Springfield store, than at Brookhaven.
