Romano’s Stromboli in Essington Now Comes in Herr’s Chip Form

Romano’s Pizzeria in Essington, the Italian restaurant credited as the birthplace of the Stromboli, is hoping to convince fans to choose its Stromboli contribution as the winner of the Herr’s 2024 Flavored by Philly contest, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

The chips are inspired by Romano’s Original Hot Stromboli made with ham, coteghino, capicola and American cheese with roasted sweet bell peppers and hot banana peppers.

The Herr’s chip contest,, which runs until Aug. 9, pits popular family-created Philadelphia-area food product flavors against each other, with fans having a chance to vote for their favorite flavor.

Romano’s is competing with Talluto’s Cheese Ravioli and Marinara from Talluto’s Authentic Italian Food, and Mom Mom’s Kitchen’s Potato Pierogi.

Talluto’s started in Philadelphia but now also has shops in Ridley Park and NorristownMom Mom’s Kitchen is a Philadelphia business.

“I feel that we’ve already won, just by being chosen as a finalist,” said Pete Romano Jr., third generation owner of the 74-year business.

The Original Hot Stromboli was among 12 finalists in the Herr’s chip contest, after fans sent in nominations. Herr’s selected the three finalists.
