High-Tech Smart Carts Coming to Drexel Hill, Brookhaven ShopRites

Instacart's Caper Carts will be available at 2 ShopRite stores in Delaware County, in Drexel Hill and Brookhaven.

Two ShopRite stores in Delaware County, one at Drexeline in Drexel Hill, the other on Edgemont Avenue in Brookhaven, will be among the first in Pennsylvania to use a high-tech shopping cart, writes Michael Tanenbaum for Philly Voice.

Customers can use the carts to keep running totals of their groceries and unlock rewards along the way.

Each smart cart has a screen where shoppers scan their items as they shop, see how much they are spending, and what coupons are available.

Those with ShopRite Price Pus membership will also receive information about how much they need to spend to get rewards.

The carts also have a built-in scale that weighs and shows the price of produce.

When items are removed from the cart, sensors deduct the cost from the customer’s total.

When ready to pay, customers take the cart to a self-checkout area and scan the bar code on the car to check out.

A tutorial goes with the cart so customers can learn how it works.

ShopRite is introducing the carts at four Philadelphia-area stores. The other two are in Northeast Philadelphia.

The Caper Carts, made by Instacart, were first introduced back in May in Hoboken, New Jersey.
