The revamped stores at the Drexeline Town Center are opening soon, writes Pete Bannon for the Daily Times.

The ribbon cutting for the new ShopRite is 9 a.m. Sept. 1. The new 72,000 square-foot store will be 60 percent larger than the previous supermarket and will include a café with beer and wine selection.

The new development also features a renovated PNC Bank, a new self-storage facility, linkage to a bike trail along Darby Creek as well as the SEPTA transit stop, and a Wawa with four electric vehicle charging stations.

Meanwhile, Upper Darby Council gave final approval this week on revised plans replacing 200 proposed apartment units on the site with medical offices instead.

Developers will submit plans for a three-floor, 60,000-square-foot medical office building in December.

Changing costs and demands triggered the shift in plans, said Drew Gorman of MCBH Drexeline Plaza LP.

With Delaware County Memorial Hospital closing last year, demand is up for high-quality medical offices in the township. Shopping centers and medical offices are a good fit, according to Gorman.

“They both have the same demand drivers … lots of visibility, easy access, and adequate parking.”
