Vivian Chen is lobbying for minority bone marrow donors to come forward as she battles acute myeloid leukemia.

Vivian Cheng Larson is a 44-year-old Montgomery County mom with a rambunctious 3-year-old named Chase who is looking for minority bone marrow donors.

She’s a full-time health care professional battling acute myeloid leukemia, writes Heather Grubola for 6abc.

For many, a bone marrow transplant is their best hope for a cure, but finding a match is difficult, especially if you are Asian, Black and Latino American.

Larson is now in chemotherapy, but if that doesn’t work, she’ll need a bone marrow transplant.

“It’s the kindness of strangers that will help me get through this tough battle,” she said.

She’s fighting lower odds of finding a match because of her ethnic background.

About half, 49 percent, of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander patients do not have a matching blood stem cell donor on the National Marrow Donor Program registry.

The number rises to 52 percent for Latino patients and 71 percent for African American patients.

“I’m hoping to not only raise awareness, but move people to action,” she said.

To sign up for the registry you can go online or click Vivian’s link on BetheMatch.org. You can also text the code teamvivianpa to 61474.
