This Delaware County community is among the best suburbs in the U.S.

It seems Media Borough’s been getting all the praise lately, with publications like Money Magazine declaring the county seat one of the 50 best places to live in the U.S.

But there’s another Delaware County community that should share some of the limelight, according to a recent ranking of the top 15 suburbs in the U.S.

Swarthmore Borough came in 13th on the list as the best U.S. suburb to live in, according to Aine Gives for Stacker.

The 2024 rankings were created by Niche, based on cost of living, the educational level of residents, housing, and public schools.

Swarthmore, with its 6,318 residents, has been a college town from the beginning.

Quakers settled in the area in the late 17th century on land granted to them by William Penn.

They founded Swarthmore in 1864, building it around Swarthmore College, which was created by the Quakers for their children.

Swarthmore officially became a borough in 1893.

The area was the birthplace of artist Benjamin West, and was earlier known as Westdale

By the 1930s and 1940s, sidewalks turned the village into a suburban college town.

Today, the borough has a 77 percent homeownership.
