Lynne and Skip Shuda had opposite ideas on where they’d like to live. Skip liked being in the woods. Lynne liked being with neighbors.
So they found an ordinary ranch house in Media back in 2017 that had a rural setting but was only a half mile from downtown.
After a few years living there, they had the house rebuilt, writes Paul Jablow for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“We weren’t in a hurry,” said Lynne.
The home needed more light, space, and air, so architect Ben Webb created a house that met their needs, using a 3D rendering to visualize the final look.
The most significant change was adding a clerestory about the center of the house, a high wall with windows above eye level that operated electronically.
Windows were enlarged, and the 7-foot-10 ceilings heightened.
A large closet in the middle of the house was removed, and a first-floor open-concept layout was created.
A wood stove replaced a fireplace.
A rear deck was added, complementing an original located on a steep slope.
When work was completed in 2022, the home’s square footage increased from 2,000 to 2,400.
