An American Airlines flight out of Philadelphia had one of the highest speeds recorded thanks to a powerful jet stream.

An American Airlines plane leaving Philadelphia International Airport Saturday clocked one of the highest speeds on record at 840 mph, accelerated by powerful 265-mile-per-hour winds, writes Megan Cerullo for CBS News, as reported at msn.com.

American Airlines Flight 120 from Philadelphia to Doha, Qatar, arrived 27 minutes early because of its high airspeed.

The wind speed was the second highest ever recorded and impacted three international flights over the weekend, but the Philadelphia flight clocked in the fastest.

Commercial flights usually travel 500 to 600 mph.

“For those flying eastbound in this jet, there will be quite a tailwind,” the National Weather Service’s Baltimore-Washington office wrote on X on Saturday, referring to the jet stream.

A changing climate is causing stronger jet stream winds, a narrow band flowing west to east.

That offers a tailwind to aircraft flying east but adds strong headwinds and turbulence for flights flying west.

Another fast-moving flight included Virgin Atlantic Flight 22, out of Washington Dulles International Airport, landing in London 45 minutes early, with an air speed of 802 miles per hour.

United Airlines Flight 64 from Newark to Lisbon flew at 838 miles per hour and landed 20 minutes early in Lisbon.
