A Foundation strategic plan for 2023-26 sets an ambitious path for The Foundation for Delaware County.

A new Foundation strategic plan has been unveiled for the years 2023-26.

This comprehensive roadmap for The Foundation for Delaware County charts an ambitious course for the Foundation and introduces large-scale collaborative philanthropic efforts, including the launch of Delco Gives Day scheduled for May 8-9.

The Board and Steering Committee enlisted Meghan McVety from Capacity for Change to lead an inclusive planning process that analyzed the Foundation’s strengths and opportunities, resulting in a plan of action. The plan will serve as a guide for how the Foundation will allocate resources — both human and financial — so that every person can thrive in Delaware County.

“I am thrilled to share the Foundation’s new strategic plan publicly,” said Frances M. Sheehan, Foundation President. “Essential to both this plan and our larger work is the community’s voice. More than 40 interviews were conducted, hundreds of surveys were submitted, focus groups were held, and staff, donors, community, and board members’ concerns and advice were integrated into a plan. The Foundation is grateful to everyone who provided input.

The new Foundation strategic plan sets the stage for growth and innovation, enhancing the Foundation’s existing initiatives, as well as taking on new opportunities, including Delco Gives Day, increased programming from our Center for Nonprofit Excellence, growing philanthropic funds and initiatives, convening around key community issues like housing insecurity, and strengthening the Foundation’s capacity and support to create more equitable systems and opportunities for all who live and work in Delaware County.”

Five strategic goals will direct the efforts and investments of The Foundation for Delaware County during the coming years.

  1. Serve as a Unifying Catalyst for Delaware County
  2. Increase Resources to Strengthen Delaware County
  3. Advance Opportunity and Equity in Delaware County
  4. Align All Foundation Programs and Services
  5. Invest in Our People and Infrastructure

According to Sheehan, “The goals reflect our strong optimism for Delaware County and our dedication to being a driving force for positive change. This plan will help ensure we play a pivotal role in fostering the well-being of everyone in our community, and we invite our community, partners, and supporters to join us in building that brighter future.”

The Foundation for Delaware County is the largest philanthropy in Delaware County. One of 900 community foundations across the U.S., the Foundation offers support and resources for nonprofits of every size, helps generous people give with more impact, brings together funders, nonprofits, and elected officials to address critical community problems, and responds to major challenges and crises as they arise.

In addition to grant funding, the Foundation operates the Center for Nonprofit Excellence to strengthen Delaware County’s nonprofit community through training workshops and peer learning opportunities.

The Foundation encourages philanthropy by connecting donors to worthy causes through efficient charitable giving vehicles like donor-advised and scholarship funds. On May 8-9, 2024, the Foundation will launch Delaware County’s first 24-hour online giving day: Delco Gives Day.

In addition, the Foundation operates the prestigious public health programs Healthy Start, the WIC nutrition program, and Nurse-Family Partnership. In addition to the Housing Opportunities Program for Equity (HOPE), other programs include El Centro (a Hispanic resource center) and a health resource center for students in the Chester Upland School District.
