Delco Day is back today for its eighth year.

The annual event was founded in 2016 by the Delco Live podcast initially to highlight punk rock bands.

It has since grown into a huge charity event, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

Chris Holbrook, co-founder of Delco Live, describes Delco Day as a “beach party in a parking lot” but for a good cause.

The day falls on June 10 each year, in recognition of the 610-area code that covers most of the county.

This year’s celebration takes place at JT Brewski’s in Secane, starting at 2 PM.  Nine musical acts will be featured on two different stages. The cost to get in? $6.10.

Proceeds go to the HEADstrong Foundation, a Delaware County-based nonprofit supporting families coping with a cancer diagnosis.

There’s a fundraising goal of $25,000.

“One thing that I noticed with people in Delco is we could be knuckleheads, but when we need to help each other out, we show up and people show out,” said Chris Spadaro of Delco Live.

The event includes a swearing-in ceremony for non-native Delconians and a presentation of an official state citation from State Rep. Jennifer O’Mara and State Sen. John Kane declaring Delco Day a state holiday.
