A New Jersey man allegedly figured out how to swindle $1,700 worth of gas from a Wawa store in Delaware and was arrested for the Wawa gas theft, writes Jeff Goldman for NJ.com and Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.

Kelvin Giron-Brand, 34, was arrested at a Wawa gas station in New Castle on Tuesday, Jan. 23, after Delaware state troopers were called about the theft of fuel.

When they arrived, they found multiple containers of diesel fuel in Giron-Brand’s Ford work van.

When troopers inspected the pump Giron-Brand was using, they discovered a device attached that tricked the pump into offering the gas for pennies on the dollar. He was able to obtain $1,700 in gas for less than $20.

Delaware State Police said, “Multiple Wawa gas stations have been experiencing a trend of diesel fuel thefts in which the suspects install a device to the fuel pump that manipulates the pump to dispense a large volume of fuel for a fraction of the cost.”

An investigation into the thefts continues.

Giron-Brand has been charged with shoplifting more than $1,550, conspiracy, and possession of burglar tools or instruments involving disabling security systems.
