For at Least a Decade, Tractor-Trailers Keep Hitting the Prospect Park Bridge. Why?

Tractor-Trailers keep colliding with the Prospect Park bridge.

Things are generally quiet in Prospect Park, except for the occasional sound of a tractor-trailer striking the railroad bridge, writes Israel Ojoko for bnn.

It’s a recurring issue in the borough, a problem that goes back decades.

Despite signs that clearly show the bridge’s clearance height, oversized trucks continue to collide with it.

The latest incident involved an aquarium business, Salvatore Mini’s Mini Reef, that had to deal with considerable disruption after an oversized truck hit the bridge outside his business and shook his building.

Mini Reef’s daily operations and finances were affected after the Prospect Park bridge impact caused structural damage to the building.

The repeated collisions at the bridge are also causing significant delays for Amtrak.

A debate is raging over who is responsible for warning systems and upgrades that could prevent future incidents.

Amtrak and borough officials have yet to agree on a solution.

However, “resolving the problem will require cooperation among federal, state, and local officials. The differing views of PennDOT and Amtrak on who bears the responsibility highlight the urgent need for a collective effort to address this persistent problem,” Ojoko writes.
