Jameel Brown had a 20-point performance to help Penn State men's basketball to victory on its opening season game, with a little defensive work thrown in.

Jameel Brown is continuing his star performance in basketball at Penn State from his three years at Haverford High School and as a high school senior during a state championship season at Westtown School.

The college sophomore guard had a career-high 20-point performance during the Nittany Lions’ season-opening victory over Delaware State on Nov. 6, writes Seth Engle for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Brown is returning to Penn State under newly hired coach Mike Rhoades, so it wasn’t clear how much playing time he’d receive.

Rhoades knew Brown could shoot but promised him floor time only if he made defense his “No. 1 approach.”

“You don’t have to make a shot to get in the game; you have to play,” Rhodes told him.

The coach knew Brown could play on the offensive end, but he also needed to be able to guard the ball and get through ball screens.

“And if you do that, you’ll help us because you’re a weapon,” Rhodes said.

Brown prepared for months and finally was up to par enough to get a block and a steal at the opening game.

Brown, point guard Kanye Clary, and Demetrius Lilley are the only three left from last year’s squad.
