Postal Service Contractor Shutting Down Sharon Hill Facility, Loss of 75 Jobs

Sharon Hill layoffs follow a decision by Matheson Flight Extenders, Inc. to close its Sharon Hill facility near the airport.

A company that contracts with the U.S. Postal Service to sort and handle mail from trucks and aircraft has decided to close a Delaware County facility, triggering 75 Sharon Hill layoffs, writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Delaware County facility sits near Philadelphia International Airport.

Matheson Flight Extenders Inc. is closing 870 Calcon Hook Road in the Folcrcroft East Business Park, effective Dec. 15, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing.

Most of the Sharon Hill non-union positions are material handlers, drivers, supervisors, station manager, and assistant station manager, according to the filing.

The SacramentoCalifornia-based company is part of Matheson Companies, which includes Matheson Postal Services as a subsidiary.

The company filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2022.

Matheson Flight Extenders Inc. will also be laying off 335 employees in Atlanta, while 300 positions will be eliminated in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and Brandywine, Maryland.

The building sits off of the Wilmington/Newark SEPTA Regional Rail line, between Route 13 and I-95, just outside of Philadelphia city limits.
