The Main Line Greenway is one step closer to becoming a reality after Lower Merion commissioners gave the preliminary concept of the greenway approval, writes Richard Ilgenfritz for Delaware County Daily Times.

Jillian Dierks, senior planner with Lower Merion, described the Main Line Greenway as “a network of designated roadways shared between cars and bicyclists and often used with multi-use trails.”

The impetus for designing the greenway is to help reduce traffic, improve air quality as well as quality of life.

“The goal was really to establish connectivity to various township networks not unlike our pedestrian plan,” Dierks said.

“We were looking at residential areas, schools, parks commercial districts. This process really started as an activity that extended from the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, which had established itself as kind of a spine connectivity.”

The network has two main sections. The eastern section will run from the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, City Avenue District, to Haverford College. The western section will run from Haverford College to Bryn Mawr and Stoneleigh.

Many of the commissioners and residents said they approve of the plan because there is need for better accessibility for cyclists.
