The Calvary Baptist parking lot has become an income generator for the church thanks to Philadelphia Union fans.

The Calvary Baptist parking lot in Chester fills up when the Philadelphia Union succeeds, reports the Associated Press in BusinessMirror.

The Chester church, which once saw Martin Luther King Jr. in attendance while a seminarian, is located near the Philadelphia Union’s home turf, Subaru Park.

The Union continues to attract fans. Last year, they made it to a championship game of Major League Soccer, boosting their popularity.

An increase in fans has allowed the church to charge $15 a vehicle to park in its lot. Volunteers from the congregation man the church parking lot during home games.

Now, this Black Protestant church that struggled financially through the pandemic is raising up to $3,000 per game.

When soccer superstar Lionel Messi showed up at Subaru Park with the Inter Miami team to play the Union, all 250 spaces of the Calvary Baptist parking lot were full.

The extra money is paying for utilities, ministries, and a new speaker system that will also allow Calvary to broadcast online.

“It’s been a blessing,” said Calvary’s pastor, Keith Dickens. “Not only just to generate funding, but also to meet and minister to new people.”

It’s also a chance to share the congregation’s history with the fans.
