The N.C. Wyeth illustration Ramona, picked up at a thrift store for about $4 just sold in auction Sept. 19.

The long-lost illustration Ramona from Chadds Ford artist N.C. Wyeth found its way to a New Hampshire thrift shop and was purchased six years ago by a woman there for $4, writes Rita Giordano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The painting sold Sept. 19 for $191,000.

It’s a frontispiece illustration that was one of four illustrations by N.C. Wyeth, father of Andrew Wyeth, created for the 1939 edition of Helen Hunt Jackson’s novel Ramona.

The painting of two women, a stern elder and a maiden, caught the eye of a woman who was walking through the Savers store in Manchester, N.H.

So she bought it, paying $4 or $4.99, depending on who’s telling the story..

Curious about the painting, she posted it on Facebook, where Lauren Lewis, a Maine-based conservator, recognized it.

On Tuesday, the painting sold for $191,000 at auction by Bonhams Skinner. The buyer has asked to remain anonymous.

Since the painting sold, the business has picked up at the New Hampshire store.

“There’s definitely more people going through the art section of the store,” said the manager.
