Jack Cavanaugh of Woodlyn has made a strong comeback against all odds thanks in part to a surfing event.

Jack Cavanaugh of Woodlyn has made a strong comeback against all odds after suffering a traumatic brain injury from a fall nearly a decade ago, writes Harshita Chawla for Essentially Sports.

He slipped into a coma for a month, and when he came out of it, he didn’t know himself or his family and had to relearn how to walk, talk and swallow.

What helped turned his life around was an annual event on a Wildwood beach, “They Will Surf Again.”

The event is organized by the nonprofit “Life Rolls On,” started by Jesse Billauer who became a quadriplegic from a surfing accident at 17.

When Jack started attending, he was in a wheelchair.

“It was just non-stop rehab at that time. For me, just to go to the beach and have my own special day, you can’t put a price on it.” Cavanaugh said.

These days, he’s a participant in the event, and he volunteers to help others.

Cavanaugh has a renewed passion for surfing and rediscovered his lost self. He graduated cum laude from West Chester University and went to work as an employment coach.
