Find Out Where You Can Enjoy the Brilliance of Sunflowers
August is a great month to check out the sunflowers in Pennsylvania and South Jersey, with chances for Instagram-worthy photos and opportunities to pick your own, writes Franki Rudnesky for Philly Voice.
This is the month when sunflowers’ bright yellow petals emerge across the region.
Sunflowers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey are planted between April and June. They usually mature between 70 to 95 days later.
Late summer and early fall are the best times to visit sunflower fields, and a great place in Delaware County to see them is at Linvilla Orchards at 137 W. Knowlton Road in Media.
Linvilla Orchards has more than 5,000 sunflower plants with eight varieties planted.
Guests can enjoy the pick-your-own experience by ordering up to five sunflowers for $11 when tickets are purchased online in advance.
Sunflowers work as cut flowers, or you can leave them on the stalk for an outdoor display or harvest them and eat the seeds, according to hgtv.com.
The plants can grow tall, reaching 14 feet in height. Many varieties attract bees and birds who dine on the nectar and seeds.
