"Poison Garden" running through Aug. 13, is a procedural horror show that interacts with its audience.

The Media Theatre’s latest show, “Poison Garden,” offers a uniquely immersive experience as the theater and audience become characters in the show, writes Jane M. Von Bergen of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“Poison Garden” blends procedural drama and campy horror. It runs through Aug. 13.

Director Kaitlin Chin’s company, Alterra Productions, is producing the show.

Set against the backdrop of a community effort to save the historic Media Theatre, “Poison Garden” introduces a sinister horticulturist with a garden of deadly intentions.

This chilling narrative is inspired by the real-life poison garden at Glen Foerd, a historic mansion in Northeast Philadelphia.

Chin’s research into the theater’s history, dating back to its 1927 vaudeville origins, adds depth to the storyline.

“It’s a sandbox-style immersive show where you, as the audience, can walk around the venue like it’s your own sandbox,” Chin said.

The play moves into the basement, the lobby, the Crystal Room, some upstairs areas, and offices.

Audience members can walk around the theater, follow one of the seven actors, or just move to look at whatever seems interesting.

“I hope they are able to… breathe in these characters and this world,” Chin said. expressed.
