Bonner-Prendie Friars Win in Dublin, Fans Cheer at Home
The Bonner-Prendergast football team may have been far away in Dublin, but Delaware County had its back.
Fans of the team got up early Friday morning to watch the game streamed at 6:30 AM from Casey’s Saloon and Restaurant in Drexel Hill.
The team was playing in the Global Ireland Football Tournament, held in Dublin, writes Jasmine Payoute for CBS News Philadelphia.
The Friars faced the U.K.-based NFL Academy.
They won 34-24.
Fans decked out in Friar’s gear cheered the team.
“To see Bonner playing in Dublin before the Notre Dame–Navy game is just a terrific thing,” parent Joe Roan said. “The fact that they won against NFL Academy, they know how to play the game, but we schooled them today, and it was just a great game.”
Traveling to Dublin meant a lot to Friars player Kieran Farren who used the trip to visit his paternal grandmother, Eileen Farren.
He last saw his 92-year-old “Nana” seven years ago, writes Joseph Santoliquito for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“This is like a family reunion. It’s my first time in Ireland, and I get to play football in front of my extended family. I’m looking to get life-savoring memories from this,” he said.
