Pennsylvania’s premier baseball player graduated from Bonner-Prendergast High School June 9, writes Matt Breen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kevin McGonigle, who grew up in Aldan, is expected to be a first-round pick in July’s MLB draft, and has been named Gatorade’s Pennsylvania Player of the Year.

The Bonner-Prendergast graduate hit .474 this season. He was the Catholic League’s Player of the Year.

He’s described as a smooth defender with a power swing.

The shortstop is signed to play at Auburn University, but he’s come under scrutiny all season from MLB Scouts.

A recently released mock draft by MLB.com has McGonigle going to Atlanta with the No. 24 pick. That’s three selections ahead of the Phillies’ pick.

Mcgonigle is a die-hard Phillies fan who has modeled his game after Chase Utley.

”His bat-to-ball skills are the best I’ve ever seen as a high-school hitter, and we’ve had some good ones in our league,” Bonner-Prendie coach Steve DeBarberie said last summer. “I’ve seen some good ones in the area. But Kevin is just on a whole different level. The way he gets the barrel onto the baseball is incredible. Even his outs. Line drives all over the field.”
