Pennsylvania is experiencing one of the worst nursing shortages in the nation. That’s not just an HR issue — it’s a public health emergency.

To help inspire more students to enter the profession, nurses from Flourtown-based Guardian Nurses Healthcare Advocates have launched a new speakers bureau program, entitled “Light the Way Through a Career in Nursing.” These industry professionals are available to speak to middle-school and high-school classes and other groups of teenagers and young adults about what life is like as a nurse.

Available speakers have years of experience in exciting clinical settings — such as ERs, ICUs, pediatric hospitals, and ORs — and are highly qualified to speak on and answer questions about the education, training, and daily lives of nurses in this demanding, fulfilling, and well-paid profession.

“Nurses are the cornerstone of healthcare,” said Guardian Nurses Healthcare Advocates President/CEO and founder Betty Long, a nationally recognized expert and speaker on patient advocacy. “They are often what stands between a good medical outcome and a bad one. Every day, nurses make a difference in their patients’ lives. It’s an incredibly rewarding career.”

Guardian Nurses Healthcare Advocates supports patients in the Greater PhiladelphiaNew YorkNew Jersey, and Seattle areas through its innovative Mobile Care Coordinator Program and patients all over the U.S. through its advocacy services programs.

“Once you are an experienced nurse, the sky is the limit on where you can work and what you can achieve,” said Long. “There are nurses in specialty clinics, travel nurses who work all over the country on different assignments, nurses in the armed forces, nurses on cruises and at resorts, nurses in schools, nurses at camps, nurses in private homes, and nurse educators who devote themselves to teaching other people how to become a nurse.”
