When working professionals seek to advance their careers, gain experience in their fields, and feel a calling to the world of academia, they have turned to Immaculata University for a doctorate in Higher Education.

Since the program’s first graduating class in 2015, more than 65 alumni have earned teaching and administrative positions in numerous colleges and universities around the nation, including public and private institutions, community colleges and selective schools, faith-based and secular universities, nursing schools, and more.

As Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and a professional who earned her doctorate in higher education at Immaculata University, Dr. Marcia Parris states that the program is unique because it is designed for those working in higher education with leadership goals whether as administrators or educators. A new cohort begins each fall, with students enjoying the flexibility of the online format while also experiencing the personalization gained through synchronous, online class meetings.

“Through the cohort, students build networks bringing different perspectives to the program as people who have work experience in a variety of fields,” said Parris.

Faculty also play a vital role as they mentor each student in their professional journey developing as researchers and educational leaders. Students prepare a research-based dissertation that responds to current and emergent issues in higher education rooted in the priority of student success.

“Our alumni are prepared to assume positions of responsibility and leadership with the vision to influence student success and the future of higher education,” said Sister Ann Heath, Program Director.

One such alum is found at Ursinus College in the position of Associate Vice President of Finance and Administration. Dr. Cale Nelson has worn many hats in the Human Resources Department at Ursinus but completing his Ed.D. advanced his career and created relationships that will last him a lifetime.

“I scouted out about 10 to 12 different doctoral programs in the area, but as soon as I sat down at Immaculata’s open house, I knew I made the right decision,” said Nelson.

Nelson recalled meeting people throughout the doctoral program from numerous areas of expertise and how their small cohort became very close, forming a supportive network of life-long colleagues from across the academy.

“The doctoral program in higher education at Immaculata is unbelievable,” said Nelson. “It’s a hidden gem and very special place. The leadership and guidance make it worth everything.”

Nelson is just one of many graduates of the program who has found himself in a leadership position at an education institution. Recent graduates, as well as many doctoral candidates, have secured positions as faculty across disciplines as well as positions as administrators and executives.

The Higher Education degree serves as an investment for the student that opens doors to career advancement. Through these influential positions, alumni are making their mark in the realm of academia, equipped to bring forth change and innovation in the industry.

With the right tools, they can make an impact in the teaching and administrative areas to improve the lives of future students.
