Starting this fall, Immaculata University will be adding two new Bachelor of Arts majors, one in public administration and the other in public health.

“These two new programs in public administration and public health create specialized, practical majors that will enable Immaculata to help meet the serious demand for professionals in these areas,” said Dr. Joshua J. Weikert, associate professor and chair of the Department of Civic Engagement.

Public health approaches healthcare from a sociological perspective. An undergraduate degree in public health produces students who can apply creative thinking, ethical reasoning, and communication skills to protect and improve the health of different communities and create effective public health policies.

This program will be a valuable addition to Immaculata’s degree offerings, as it will focus on integrating several disciplines as the university prepares future leaders.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nationwide job growth in public health is projected to increase by 9.3 percent over the next decade. Within the past decade, jobs in public and nonprofit administration increased nearly 20 percent.

Public administration combines political science, business, and sociology coursework to prepare students for careers in public service and nonprofit management. A bachelor’s degree in public administration prepares students to work in a variety of managerial and operational roles in public service. Students will learn the fundamentals of federal, state, and local government administration, as well as a range of business management skills, and how to apply these tools in diverse settings.

Both new majors offer a hybrid delivery method that combines traditional face-to-face classroom instruction with an online component. In addition to students from the College of Undergraduate Studies, adult learners from the College of Adult Professional Studies can enroll in either program.
