The Village Player performers, made up of Freedom Village resident volunteers, perform a production of Way Out West in a Dress. Social communities help seniors end isolation and loneliness.

The Village Players, a group of resident actors at Freedom Village at Brandywine, showcased their theatrical talents April 14 and 15 when they premiered their third musical, “Way Out West in a Dress.”

“Village Players is a fantastic opportunity for residents looking to get involved in our community and for other residents to enjoy the results of our work,” Maggie Doyle told MyChesco.

Doyle directed and produced the show with Fran Doyle. Both are Freedom Village residents.

The Doyles are passionate about their theater work and see it as a way to give back to the community while doing something they love.

The volunteer group of residents comes together to rehearse, then offer live plays to the Freedom Village community. Most of the residents that audition and participate have little to no theater experience.

“What I love about this organization is that anyone can be a part of it,” Fran Doyle said.

Every member, “new or seasoned, has a wonderful time participating,” even though most have no theater background, Doyle said.

“This was the first time I’ve been in a play, and once I got over being nervous, it was a blast,” said Freedom Village resident Ben LaGarde. “My favorite part was seeing the smiles and laughter our group brought to our friends and fellow residents. I look forward to doing it again!”

Tickets to the shows are free, though donations are accepted, split evenly between Freedom Village’s outreach committee and scholarship funds.

“Way Out West” generated $3,600 that will be shared with both funds.
