Darby Native Leaves Parts of Himself Around Philadelphia
Darby artist Irregular, born Sean Hassett, is a bit of a recluse, but he’s getting noticed in Philadelphia for his calling card graffiti tag “Irregular” or “Irregular Sean”, writes Earl Hopkins for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“I have no backing and there’s no system that I’m part of that’s helping generate what I’m putting out,” Irregular said. “I’m trying to show people that you don’t have to take the normal route, you can do it on your own.”
Growing up in Darby, he was drawn to the word ‘Irregular”.
The 33-year-old artist started his Irregular graffiti tag in 2020, partly inspired by the protests following George Floyd’s murder.
He sees his art tags as a symbol of reflection and self-identity, with the word “irregular” a magnet drawing a connection between him and the viewer.
These days Irregular quietly sells his work in Rittenhouse Square and he offers art on his website.
“I always wanted to create things that sell themselves on the street,” he said.
He’s also created a temporary mural for last year’s Wawa Welcome America and his work Mural Magic is irregular was featured at the 2023 Flower Show.
