Cavanagh Family Funeral Homes, with locations in Norwood and Media, has placed an AI-driven obituary writer on its website, writes Victor Firillo for Philadelphia Magazine.

The app comes from Tribute Technologies, a subscription service provided to funeral homes.

It asks for basic information—name, gender, date and place of birth, date, and place of death, and cause of death.

Next, it asks for family information and history. That’s followed by the decedent’s interests and hobbies.

The app offers a list of 20 personality traits.

Finally, it asks how creative and intricate you want the obituary to be, and lets you pick a writing tone that includes traditional, playful, formal, religious, poetic, witty, or inspirational.

And you can decide if there should be a memorable quote.

A few minutes later, a completed obituary pops up.

Firillo tried the app out by having it write his own.

“I’m not sure how many obituary writers are left in this world. But they’re now officially irrelevant, thanks to artificial intelligence,” Firillo wrote, a bit tongue in cheek. “That’s what I learned the other day when I let a Delco funeral home’s new AI obituary app write mine. “
