Wawa Moves Across the Street From Sheetz as Expansion Heats Up
Wawa has effectively moved into Sheetz’s house with preliminary plans for a Wawa store in Benner Township, Centre County, across the street from an existing Sheetz store, writes Matt DiSanto for the Centre Daily Times.
Wawa’s push to Centre County in central Pennsylvania would be its most western outpost in the state.
A store near Harrisburg is also in the works.
Right now, its most west location is East Petersburg outside of Lancaster.
Wawa’s running 1,000 stores on the East Coast in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Florida.
Stores are proposed for North Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama and further west in the United States, in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
Up to now, competition between Wawa and Sheetz has been light-hearted and mostly fan-driven. The two rivals even paired up to help supply food during the pandemic.
Sheetz has dominated central and western Pennsylvania for decades. It has 650 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland.
Sheetz does have stores in Wawa territory, including Reading, Morgantown and Exeter.
Wawa generated $14.9 billion in revenue, Forbes said in 2022. Sheetz came in with $11.7 billion.
