Joe Sestak, former U.S. Congressman in Delaware County’s former Seventh District, has become the 24^th Democratic candidate for president, writes Sandra E. Garcia for the New York Times.

The 67-year-old, a graduate of Cardinal O’Hara High School, was elected to Congress in 2006. He served in the military from 1974 to 2005, finishing as a three-star Navy admiral.

Sestak made his presidential bid announcement June 22.

“I want to be that President who serves the American people the way they deserve to be served,” Sestak wrote on his Facebook page.

Sestak gained the party’s nomination in the 2010 Democratic primary to run for a United States Senate seat in Pennsylvania.

He defeated long-time Sen. Arlen Specter who ran in the Democratic primary after switching parties.

Sestak lost in the general election to former congressman, Republican Pat Toomey.

After Congress, Sestak taught Ethical Leadership and Restoring the American Dream courses at Cheyney University  and Carnegie Mellon University.

He held the General Omar N. Bradley Chair in Strategic Leadership at the United States Army War College, Dickinson College, and the Penn State University Dickinson School of Law and School of International Affairs.
