These Divas in Havertown Dance Their Way to Fitness
A group of senior citizens are part of a special fitness class “Dancing Divas” at the Haverford Township Community Recreational Environmental Center that’s teaching them some new dance steps, reports Dave Edwards for 6abc.
The class is geared toward older women who like to move, said Elizabeth Luff, an adult fitness instructor at the Center.
Participants move their entire bodies in a variety of different ways to a variety of music.
“I don’t feel like I’m 65 years old because this class keeps you young,” said participant Marianne Castellano from Havertown.
They are exercising not only physically but mentally too because they are learning different steps and the brain is constantly working.
“Senior citizens today are a whole different animal. It’s true that 65 is the new 45,” Luff said.
People who exercise improve strength and they are building muscle mass even over the age of 65. It’s also good for balance, coordination, and agility to help seniors keep up with activities for their daily living.
“It’s important for me at the age of 71 to keep active and kind of defy the numbers on my birthday cake,” said Dolores Antenucci of Havertown.
