After receiving treatment for an eating disorder, figure skater Gracie Gold, who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, was back on the ice and training at IceWorks in Aston, writes Karen Crouse for The New York Times.

Gold, 23, was a teenage prodigy in 2014 and was favored to win the gold medal at the 2018 Olympics. However, in 2017, depression caused her life to unravel.

She sought help by entering an inpatient program for eating disorders. Skeptical at first, she soon embraced the experience.

“I thought it literally can’t get any worse or I’m going to die, and I want to live,” said Gold.

After treatment, she gravitated back toward skating. She moved to the Philadelphia area for a fresh start with a new coach, Vincent Restencourt.

While training at Ice Works, she also gave skating lessons to children and adults. And when it was time for her to return to competition, she would have a new program in place.
