Unlike most people who believe sub-zero temperatures mean hot coffee and time spent indoors, ice skaters in Delaware County decided to take advantage of a nearby frozen pond by playing some hockey, writes Shai Ben-Yaacov for WHYY.

The pond at Fenimore Woods in Radnor Township had completely frozen over, with six sizable areas cleared for ice skating.

With erratic winter temperatures, skaters are never certain when conditions will be right. So Caroline Davis, who plays hockey at Rochester Institute of Technology, took advantage of the latest cold burst.

“I’m just home right now for break,” said Davis, “so this was the only time I could come out and play pond hockey.”

However, determining whether the ice is thick enough is critical. This means players have to ensure that the ice does not does not crack underneath when they step on it, and that the sub-zero temperatures are stable.

Villanova native Bill Farrell, who has been coming to the pond for nearly five decades, has a simpler way of assessing safety.

“I pull up in the parking lot,” he said. “If there’s a bunch of people on it, it’s solid enough.”
