Episcopal Academy 9th Grader 1 of 100 in US Chosen for Disney Academy

A 15-year-old ninth grader at Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, Tavis Sanders, will be heading off to Walt Disney World for a unique learning opportunity, writes TaRhonda Thomas for 6abc.

Sanders was one of 3 Pennsylvania students chosen for the Disney Dreamers Academy and one of only 100 students nationwide chosen for the Disney Dreamers Academy.

The annual mentorship program offers guidance to Black students and teens from underrepresented communities on everything from careers to communications, allowing the chosen students to go behind the scenes at Disney.

Sanders, who has aims toward being an engineer, while also being a photography enthusiast, already knows what he wants to accomplish at the four-day event.

“(I want to learn) how engineering plays into those roles and how they make the roller coasters and how they make them function,” said the Episcopal Academy student.

Sanders found out about his good fortune after receiving a message that 6abc wanted to interview him.

“(My school dean) was like, ‘6ABC is coming.’ and I was like, ‘wait, really?’

I’m so excited and I feel like it’s such a great opportunity,” Sanders added.
